Benefits of Rudraksha: Types, Mukhis & How to Wear

Rudraksha beads have been revered in Sanatan tradition for thousands of years. Worn by sages, saints, and spiritual seekers, these sacred seeds carry a powerful energy that supports physical wellbeing, mental clarity, and spiritual growth. But what exactly is Rudraksha, and how do you choose the right one?

What is Rudraksha?

Rudraksha (रुद्राक्ष) literally means "Eye of Rudra (Shiva)." These are the dried seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, found primarily in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, India, and Indonesia. Each bead is naturally formed with lines called mukhis (faces), and the number of mukhis determines the bead's spiritual properties.

Types of Rudraksha — The Mukhis

1 Mukhi (One Face)

The rarest and most powerful Rudraksha. It represents Lord Shiva himself and is said to bestow moksha (liberation), supreme consciousness, and freedom from all sins. Ideal for deep meditators and spiritual seekers.

2 Mukhi (Two Face)

Represents the union of Shiva and Shakti. It promotes harmony in relationships, emotional balance, and unity of mind and heart. Excellent for couples and those seeking inner peace.

3 Mukhi (Three Face)

Associated with Agni (fire) and Lord Brahma. It helps burn past karma, boosts confidence, and removes feelings of guilt and inferiority. Great for those overcoming self-doubt.

4 Mukhi (Four Face)

Ruled by Lord Brahma, the creator. It enhances creativity, intelligence, and communication. Ideal for students, writers, and those in creative fields.

5 Mukhi (Five Face)

The most common and widely worn Rudraksha. Ruled by Kalagni Rudra, it promotes health, peace of mind, and overall wellbeing. Suitable for everyone and considered safe to wear without initiation.

6 Mukhi (Six Face)

Associated with Lord Kartikeya. It grounds energy, enhances willpower, and supports emotional stability. Beneficial for those dealing with stress or emotional turbulence.

7 Mukhi (Seven Face)

8 Mukhi (Eight Face)

Associated with Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. It helps overcome challenges, brings success, and removes negativity from one's path.

9 Mukhi (Nine Face)

Ruled by Goddess Durga (Navadurga). It bestows immense energy, fearlessness, and dynamic power. The 9 Mukhi awakens the Shakti within the wearer, helping overcome all obstacles and enemies. It is especially beneficial for those seeking strength, courage, and protection.

10 Mukhi (Ten Face)

Associated with Lord Vishnu, the preserver. It provides all-round protection and removes the negative effects of all nine planets. The 10 Mukhi creates a powerful shield of divine energy around the wearer, bringing peace, stability, and freedom from fear.

11 Mukhi (Eleven Face)

Ruled by the eleven Rudras (forms of Shiva). It bestows wisdom, right judgment, and adventurous spirit. The 11 Mukhi is said to give the merit of performing Ashwamedha Yagna and protects the wearer from accidents and untimely death. Ideal for those on a path of deep sadhana.

12 Mukhi (Twelve Face)

Associated with Lord Surya (the Sun). It radiates brilliance, confidence, and leadership qualities. The 12 Mukhi removes diseases related to the stomach and eyes, boosts self-esteem, and fills the wearer with the radiant energy of the sun. Ideal for leaders, administrators, and those in positions of authority.

13 Mukhi (Thirteen Face)

Ruled by Lord Indra and Kamadeva. It fulfils all desires, attracts charm and charisma, and brings success in worldly matters. The 13 Mukhi is said to grant the wearer the power of attraction and is beneficial for those in business, politics, or public life.

14 Mukhi (Fourteen Face)

Known as Deva Mani (divine gem). It activates the Ajna chakra (third eye), enhances intuition, and is said to protect the wearer from all negative energies. Ruled by Lord Hanuman, it bestows fearlessness and divine protection.

15 Mukhi (Fifteen Face)

Associated with Lord Pashupatinath (a supreme form of Shiva). It awakens higher intuition, activates the subconscious mind, and helps the wearer connect with deeper spiritual truths. The 15 Mukhi is also known to attract abundance and is beneficial for those on a path of spiritual evolution and material prosperity together.

16 Mukhi (Sixteen Face)

Associated with Lord Ram and is known as the Jai Rudraksha (Victory bead). It bestows victory over enemies, protection from fear, and freedom from legal troubles. It is said to bring success in all endeavours and is highly revered for its protective energy.

Special Forms of Rudraksha

Gauri Shankar

Two naturally joined Rudraksha beads representing the divine union of Lord Shiva (Shankar) and Goddess Parvati (Gauri). It is considered one of the most auspicious Rudraksha for family harmony, marital bliss, and spiritual growth. It balances the masculine and feminine energies within the wearer and is ideal for couples, families, and those seeking deep inner balance.

Garbha Gauri

A rare and sacred form where a smaller Rudraksha bead is naturally embedded within a larger one — symbolising a mother and child. It is associated with fertility, safe pregnancy, and the nurturing energy of the Divine Mother. Garbha Gauri is highly revered by women seeking motherhood and is also worn for protection of children and family wellbeing.

Nepali vs. Indonesian Rudraksha — What's the Difference?

Nepali Rudraksha are larger, have deeper and more defined mukhis, and are considered more potent due to the high-altitude Himalayan environment they grow in. They are the most prized and authentic variety.

Indonesian Rudraksha are smaller and smoother, making them popular for malas and bracelets. They are more affordable but still carry spiritual energy.

How to Wear Rudraksha

  • Cleanse before wearing: Soak the bead in clean water overnight or wash with Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar) before first use.
  • Energise it: Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times while holding the bead to activate its energy.
  • Best time to wear: Monday morning, after a bath, is considered the most auspicious time to begin wearing Rudraksha.
  • Thread or metal: Red or black thread, or silver/gold wire, are traditionally used. Avoid copper for most mukhis.
  • Keep it pure: Remove before consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol. Avoid wearing during funerals.
  • Wear it with intention: Set a clear sankalpa (intention) when you first wear your Rudraksha.

Who Can Wear Rudraksha?

Anyone can wear Rudraksha — regardless of age, gender, or religion. The 5 Mukhi is universally safe and beneficial. For higher mukhis and special forms like Gauri Shankar and Garbha Gauri, it is recommended to wear after proper energisation and with clear intention.
